Bientôt l'Allemagne entre en guerre. La propagande nazie s'introduit dans les écoles. La jeunesse hitlérienne enrôle... Puis, les premières bombes tombent sur Berlin. Les enfants sont évacués à la campagne. De 1930 à 1945, d'année en année, la vie devient plus difficile. La guerre - peu ressentie au début par les enfants allemands - impose sa priorité de plus en plus. Ilse Koehn raconte simplement ce qu'elle a vécu jusqu'à la débâcle finale où, dans un Berlin en ruine et en flammes, les enfants se quittaient le soir en se disant : "Reste en vie.""
