Sarah plans for Jedda to marry Joe, a handsome stockman. But her plans are rudely shattered by the arrival of Marbuck, a magnificent Aborigine, who immediately desires Jedda for himself. Psychologically tormented by the conflict between her civilized upbringing and the pull of her native heritage, Jedda falls prey to Marbuck's magnetism, and is finally "sung to his blanket" in the centuries-old tradition of her people. Determined not to lose her now, Marbuck kidnaps Jedda and, pursued by Joe and the police who want Marbuck for murder, he takes her back to his homeland. But Marbuck's tribe disown him for bringing a strange girl to their territory, and after he has been "sung to death" by the elders, he and Jedda take refuge in a wild and desolate cave land above his village. Marbuck begins to believe that the old men's sorcery is working and, insane with fear at the thought of his approaching death, he decides to kill Jedda in an attempt to atone for his sin. As Joe and the police arrive, Marbuck, carrying Jedda in his arms, hurls himself off the edge of the cliffs. Now Aborigine legend says that whenever the Jedda-bird is seen flying high above the bush, it is really the spirit of the dead young girl."@en
