Interviews with Vietnamese-American women are re-enacted using excerpts drawn from an oral history, published in France, not from these women's own experiences. The use of traditional dance and poetry suggests that the oppression of women under the communist government is the continuation of the traditional subjugation of Vietnamese women. However, 'consumption of meaning' takes second place to the creation for the filmmaker and the spectator of 'a critically creative space' in which to explore the politics of interviews, the meaning of language itself and the manipulations taken for granted in more conventional documentary strategies. A range of alternative strategies are employed in the resistance to categorisation: non-linearity, disjunction between spoken and written text, and between speaker and what is spoken, a tension between fabrication and the desire for naturalism.
