Verführung: die grausame Frau Seduction: the cruel woman
Loosely based on Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's Venus in Furs, this film explores the role of sado-masochism in sexual obsession through a darkly humorous dreamlike drama centred around a mysterious raven-haired dominatrix played by Pina Bausch dancer Mechthild Grossman. Wanda's professional task is to be cruel, her speciality to invent traps for her male and female lovers. Wanda, however, feels a certain ambivalence towards her work. Even the cruel woman, tired of love-ridden slavery, secretly seeks out indifference and hurt, for masochism represents the return of feeling, the revival of love, otherwise killed by devotion and kindness. Seduction and love may both be illusions, but lovers need hurt if they are to continue loving.
