  • "A silent film of the history and landscape of Mexico, Que Viva Mexico was intended to consist of four episodes. The "Maguey" episode is a love story about a peasant and his bride. In its present form the work was viewed by Eisenstein in 1947, and the director disowned the film (albeit after a 14-year fight to regain the original footage from sponsor Upton Sinclair)."

  • "After refusing to let Eisenstein edit his film, Que Viva Mexico, its backer Upton Sinclair signed over to producer Sol Lesser the task of assembling a film from the unedited footage. The resultant Thunder Over Mexico is drawn from "Maguey", one of the six sections envisaged by Eisenstein. It tells the story of a young peon in an early 20th century feudal hacienda who is moved to rebellion following the rape of his fiancee. This film thus joins Marie Seton's and Aleksandrov's attempted reconstructions (Time in the Sun and Que Viva Mexico) and Jay Leyda's assemblage of surviving footage (Eisenstein's Mexican Film) as representations, however imperfect or bowdlerized of Eisenstein's unfinished epic."@en
