Correspondence, circulars, manuscripts, reminiscences, speeches, reports, legal and financial documents, diaries, printed material and scrapbooks relating to his work as U.S. Marshal, national and state Democratic politics, and the cattle business. Correspondence concerns cattle sales, appraisal of ranches in Northern Arizona, political patronage, assessments of Arizona's political situation, and issues affecting the U.S. Marshal's office. The series of U.S. Marshal's Office materials record the official activities of the office including activities of deputies in Tucson, Phoenix, Prescott, and Globe, policies and regulations, matters relating to federal prisoners and correspondence with the F.B.I. concerning subversive activities during World War II. There is also correspondence relating to the arrest of Pia Machita, a Tohono O'odham leader who counselled draft evasion to his people. Writings include biographical material as well as biographical sketches of U.S. Marshals of Arizona, 1878-1914, and sketches of the lives of William R. Mathews and Charles U. Pickrell, and several reports on topics related to law enforcement, prisons, and Democratic politics. Correspondents include Isabella Greenway, Henry Ashurst, Carl Hayden, J. Edgar Hoover, and Franklin D. Roosevelt.
