  • "The artist visualized and interpreted themes and concepts from J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy novel, The Lord of the Rings, employing a variety of materials from the fields of painting and drawing. The Lord of the Rings is a novel of fantasy. It deals with the heroic quest reluctantly undertaken by a hobbit, Frodo Baggins, and of the trials and tribulations he undergoes to achieve it. The artist, in preparing this project, drew on his background of interest in the work of Walt Disney, early children's book illustration, and the school of Romantic landscape. The wealth of usable material in the book made it difficult to choose subject matter. Ink, crayon, pencil and airbrush were used in addition to paint. The artist concluded that he might have narrowed his range a little more; there seemed to be a lack of coherence in the series. Value and subject matter were stressed."
