"Papers, 1838 and 1840. Included here is a military appointment certificates for Eastman as Brigade Inspector of the 10th Brigade, 5th Division, Michigan Militia, as signed by Stevens T. Mason, Governor of Michigan, dated Sept. 4, 1838. A note on the back states that the oath was taken on March 17, 1840 as witnessed by E.A. Brown, St. Col. 20th Regiment, 10th Brig., 5th Div. The certificate was stamped with imprint of state seal. Also, a certificate of admission for Eastman as an attorney, counsellor at law and solicitor in chancery, from the Michigan Circuit Court (Washtenaw County), dated Jan. 31, 1857. The certificate was signed and sealed by I.E. Field, County Clerk, and A.M. Gould, Deputy Clerk."
