  • "Compilation of three rehearsals for the Dance in America program The spellbound child, first telecast on May 25, 1981. In the first rehearsal (cassette 1 and the first 12 min. of cassette 2), choreographer George Balanchine, assisted by Rosemary Dunleavy, works with Christopher Byars, the little boy who sings the title role, and the adult and child dancers who form the ensemble of dragonflies, moths, bats, frogs, and toads. Emile Ardolino, the television director, and designer Kermit Love also appear on camera. The second rehearsal (cassette 2, ca. 2 min.) is a partial run-through of the dance of the shepherds and shepherdesses, accompanied by piano and counts from a woman off-camera. In the third rehearsal (cassette 2, ca. 8 min.), Balanchine works with Rosemary Dunleavy, standing in for Susan Freedman as the Chinese cup, and Mel Tomlinson as the Teapot. Christopher Byars appears briefly at the beginning of the rehearsal, and Arthur Mitchell appears towards the end, suggesting and demonstrating steps."

In the first rehearsal (cassettes 1, 2, and first 13 min. of cassette 3), choreographer George Balanchine, assisted by Rosemary Dunleavy, works on segments from the second scene, set in a garden with a cast of dragonflies, moths, bats, frogs, and an owl. Balanchine works intensively on an encounter between a dragonfly (danced by Florence Fitzgerald) and the child of the title role (Christopher Byars). Some sections are recorded with a wide angle lens, and Balanchine occasionally discusses camera angles with director Emile Ardolino. Kermit Love, the costume designer, is also glimpsed on camera. In the second rehearsal (cassette 3, last 25 min.), a group of boys playing toads joins the ensemble. Lincoln Kirstein observes from the sidelines. Balanchine works intensively with Christopher Byars and a male dancer, then with the four women playing the dragonflies. A fish-eye lens is used in some sections."@en
