Vienna, end of an Empire the new music

When, around 1909, Schoenberg broke with the tonal system that had been the standard language of classical Western music, he already had two brilliant pupils, Alban Berg and Anton Webern; they would comprise with him the so-called Second Viennese School. The next step beyond atonality was serialism. As for Vienna, the post-World War I years did not provide a fertile ground for creativity and the second world war put an end to it. This video contains performances of sections of Schoenberg's "Erwartung," Opus 25 for piano, Alban Berg's Wozzeck and violin concerto, and from Alexander Goehr, a Quartet. Includes segments on Hollywood film scores by modern Austrian composers Max Steiner and Eric Korngold and on the latest advances in acoustics and computer and electronic music by such composers as Stockhausen.
