  • "In the late 19th century, the trickle of Italian immigrants to America turned into a flood. The newly united Italy left poor Italian peasants to take care of themselves so they immigrated to America in search of a better life. Yet assimilation proved painful, and Italian-Americans often struggled against the same oppression from which they had fled. The newcomers clustered in urban ghettos, creating "Little Italys" from New York to San Francisco."
