"Britton Davis' first-hand account of the controversial 'Geronimo' Campaign of 1885-86 is one of the few fairly presented pictures of the famous renegade and the men who finally forced his surrender. Davis knew most of the people involved in the campaign, and was himself in charge of Indian scouts, some of whom helped hunt down the small band of fugitives. He gives an accurate picture not only of the campaign and the personalities involved but also of the Indians as human beings, which few believed they were in those days. Although he considered the Apaches 'especially wild, intractable, and resentful of restraint', he also found them to be good scouts, and retained a profound respect for their abilities. Robert Utley's foreward re-evaluates the account for the modern reader and establishes its historical background. -- Back Cover."@en
