Solar neutrinos, oscillations, and mixing

A lecture by Professor Wick Haxton of the University of Washington, Seattle on the "solar neutrino problem": The discrepancy between the predictions of the standard solar model and the results of the chlorine, Kamioka, and SAGE/GALLEX experiments is often considered strong evidence for new particle physics. Indeed, the solar enhancement of neutrino oscillations, a phenomenon that has familiar analogs in coupled pendula, provides a plausible explanation for the measurements. Yet, despite claims to the contrary, he argues that nonstandard solar model solutions are not yet ruled out. He discusses how experiments currently underway might be augmented to provide more constraints on proposed solutions.
