[The life and opinions of Tristram Shandy ... With an introduction by Christopher Morley and illustrations by T.M. Cleland.]

The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman (or, more briefly, Tristram Shandy) is a novel by Laurence Sterne. It was published in nine volumes, the first two appearing in 1759, and seven others following over the next 10 years. It was not always held in high esteem by other writers (Samuel Johnson responded that, "Nothing odd will do long. Tristram Shandy did not last."), but its bawdy humour was popular with London society, and it has come to be seen as one of the greatest comic novels in English, as well as a forerunner for many modern narrative devices.-- Excerpted from Wi.

  • "Introduction and Notes by Robert Folkenflik Rich in playful double entendres, digressions, formal oddities, and typographical experiments, The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman provoked a literary sensation when it first appeared in England in a series of volumes from 1759 to 1767. An ingeniously structured novel (about writing a novel) that fascinates like a verbal game of chess, Tristram Shandy is the most protean and playful English novel of the eighteenth century and a celebration of the art of fiction; its inventiveness anticipates the work of Joyce, Rushdie, and Fuentes in our own century. This Modern Library Paperback is set from the nine-volume first edition from 1759. From the Trade Paperback edition."@en
  • "Sterne's great comic novel pretends to tell the story of its narrator's life while actually embarking on numerous and elaborate digressions concerning his father and uncle, and playing havoc with fictional and narrative forms all the while."@en
  • "Tristram Shandy wants to tell his life story, but his narrative is so discursive and explanatory that he is unable ever to reach the present day."@en

  • "Ostensibly Tristram's narration of his life story, one of the central jokes of the novel is that the main character cannot explain anything simply without making explanatory diversions to add context and colour to his tale, to the extent that we do not even reach Tristram's own birth until Volume III. Most of the action is concerned with domestic upsets or comic misunderstandings, which find humour in the opposing temperaments. In between such events, Tristram as narrator finds himself discoursing at length on sexual practices, insults, the influence of one's name, noses, as well as exploratio."@en
  • "This multi-volume comic masterpiece is a must-read for fans of literary humor writing. An inventive pastiche of a staggering array of eighteenth-century thinkers, writers, and artists, Tristram Shandy combines intellectual allusions with rollicking -- and sometimes bawdy -- humor."@en
  • "Tristram Shandy regales the reader not with his life but with his idiosyncratic family and the circumstances surrounding his conception and birth, with many digressions on various related and unrelated subjects."@en

  • "A novel about writing a novel is the subject of this complex classic which has been described as the greatest shaggy dog story in the English language."@en
  • "Laurence Sterne's beloved comic novel, The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman is the "biography" of Tristram Shandy'a wonderfully humorous and eccentric narrator who guides the reader from his conception to his birth, and on to his life as an adult. The twists and turns of Tristram's life expose him to such memorable characters as Uncle Toby, Corporal Trim, Parson Yorick, Dr. Slop and the Widow Wadman'whose own stories enrich the central narrative of Tristram's life. Published in nine separate volumes from 1759 ' 1767, Tristram Shandy is recognized today as one of the first modern novels in English literature. Since its publication over 250 years ago, Sterne's classic has influenced numerous reproductions for both the stage and screen, including the 2006 'mokumentary' Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story, directed by Michael Winterbottom and starring Steve Coogan. HarperPerennial Classics brings great works of literature to life in digital format, upholding the highest standards in ebook production and celebrating reading in all its forms. • "At once endlessly facetious and highly serious, Sterne's great comic novel contains some of the best-known and best-loved characters in English literature--including Uncle Toby, Corporal Trim, Parson Yorick, and Dr. Slop--and boasts one of the most innovative and whimsical narrative styles in all literature. This revised edition of Sterne's extraordinary novel retains the text based on the first editions of the original nine volumes (with Sterne's later changes), adds two illustrations by William Hogarth, and expands and updates the introduction, bibliography, and notes, to make this the most critically up-to-date edition available. The text of the novel preserves, as far as possible, the appearance of Sterne's idiosyncratic typography and features such as black pages, marbled pages, blank pages, missing chapters and other devices. The introduction sheds light on the novel's innovations and influence and provides a biographical account of the author. Comprehensive notes identify the profusion of references and reveal previously overlooked sources. - Publisher."
  • "Onvoltooide parodie op de autobiografie die vrijwel geheel bestaat uit minder ter zake doende uitweidingen en bespiegelingen."
  • "Reworks the famous eighteenth-century satire as a post-modern graphic novel."
  • "Narrated by Shandy, the story begins at the moment of his conception and diverts into endless digressions, interruptions, stories-within-stories, and other narrative devices. The focus shifts from the fortunes of the hero himself to the nature of his family, environment, and heredity, and the dealings within that family offer repeated images of human unrelatedness and disconnection. The narrator is isolated in his own privacy and doubts how much, if anything, he can know for certain even about himself."@en
