Developing a missional expectation for the Sunday School

The Sunday School is the most elemental unit of First Baptist Church, Gatesville, and as such has the greatest possibility to affect change in the rest of the church system. The Young Adult Sunday School class agreed to participate as the project class. The project involved both a teaching component and a change in the leadership structure of the class. For five weeks the class was taught concerning the missional nature of God and the Church. In each class session they were presented with local mission opportunities in which they could be involved, and at the end of the class sessions were asked to determine the mission in which they would be involved. The structural change involved the creation of two leadership positions. The mission coordinator will work specifically with the chosen mission. The discovery coordinator will be responsible for working with the class to involve each member in the mission. To evaluate the effectiveness of the project, the class participated in a survey prior to the project and a survey following the project. In addition, individual class members were asked to keep a journal composed of specific questions relating to their understanding of mission and the church, Each of the members who kept a journal was interviewed following the project's completion. A transition group was also created, composed of the mission coordinator, discovery coordinator, and three church members who were not members of the participating Sunday School class. The transition group was asked to participate in every phase of the project with the project class. They were asked to keep the same guided journal as the project class, and met weekly to discuss the week's curriculum and possibilities for implementation in the Sunday School structure as a whole. Evaluation also included a focus group interview following the completion of the project.
