Thomas Esklund is a widowed country doctor. His life in the quiet provinces is settled and sedate, broken up only by his duties to his patients and calls from his attentive and firmly nosey friend Lotta. He appoints Eeva from the House of Orphans as a housekeeper. Her assured, unpredictable and enigmatic presence gradually throws Thomas? household into turmoil.
