Constructing Australia complete series

A three-part documentary, which interweaves selected archival footage and film dramatisation of historical events to tell the story of engineering feats by visionary Australians with the ambition and determination to construct structures to link, communicate and open up inaccessible frontiers. These three monumental Australian engineering projects, each helped unite a country and mould its sense of identity. Episode one recounts how a giant steel arch, resembling a coat hanger, was conceived with the purpose of creating 'the people's bridge' by engineer, J.J.C. Bradfield in partnership with politican Jack Lang. Episode two is the story of how two men shared a vision for opening up Western Australia, by pumping a river of water through pipes across the desert. Episode three is about how, through John McDouall Stuart's exploration of Australia's inhospitable interior, Charles Todd was able to construct a telegraph line through the heart of the continent, linking Australia to the world, and the world to Australia.

  • "A three-part documentary, which interweaves selected archival footage and film dramatisation of historical events to tell the story of engineering feats by visionary Australians with the ambition and determination to construct structures to link, communicate and open up inaccessible frontiers. In the process, they stirred up controversy, both at home and in Britain. This 'people's bridge' was begun during the Great Depression and completed in March 1932. The story of its construction tells about seemingly insurmountable practical problems, human drama, personal conflicts and political intrigues. The end product was the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which not only altered the life of the city, but soon became the symbol of Sydney and Australia."

  • "The Bridge is the ... definitive story of the building of Sydney Harbour Bridge and the vision of those who made it happen, despite their personal conflicts and political intrigues. Pipe Dreams is the epic historical story of the 19th century construction of the longest water pipeline in the world - the Perth to Coolgardie Water Scheme. A Wire Through the Heart brings to life the epic story of constructing Australia's overland telegraph. The two central characters are dramatically recreated, explorer John McDouall Stuart and scientist Charles Todd, and the film documents their extraordinary tales of adventure and engineering struggle. -- ABV-TV website."@en

  • ""Constructing Australia is the first three-part doco-drama series to be produced under the Film Australia Making History Initiative. The first episode is the definitive story of how a giant steel arch resembling a coat hanger, became one of world's most recognised structures, and an engineering triumph. Completed during the dark days of the Great Depression and finished in March 1932, it is the legacy of a fateful partnership between two very different men - a brilliant engineer, JJC Bradfield, and a maverick politician, Jack Lang - who shared a relentless ambition to create "the people's bridge". Along the way, they managed to stir up more than one hornets' nest, both at home and in Britain. Massive, majestic and breathtaking, the Bridge was the greatest engineering challenge of its day anywhere on earth. Nothing like it had ever been attempted in Australia. It not only altered the life of a city forever, it became a symbol of a bold young nation and a changing world. And it was certainly visionary. At a time when there were only 30,000 cars and trucks in the entire city, the Bridge could carry 6000 vehicles and 160 trains every hour and all of Sydney's people could have easily crossed it in a single afternoon. With its graceful arch rising high above the famous harbour, it remained the tallest structure in the city until the late 1960s.The tale of its construction combines immense practical problems and intense human drama, personal conflicts and political intrigues.Today, it is impossible to imagine Sydney, and Australia, without it, but as the film reveals, the bridge we know and love was at risk of not being built."--website."@en
