Transylvania

The history of Transylvania University is traced in this book that commemorates its bicentennial. The ongoing life of the institution is placed in meaningful relation to the educational history of the nation and to the political, economic, social, and cultural forces that influenced that history. Transylvania was the first western university in the U.S. Its establishment and growth is described and its leaders and contributions are discussed. Among the topics covered in the 22 chapters are: learning in the wilderness; the contributions of James Moore, Horace Holley, Burris Jenkins, and Charles Loos; problems and slow growth of a university; the failure of innovative education; the crisis in the medical department; the period of decline, 1850-1865; the role of the Methodists; student life from the Civil War to World War I; World War I and the "heresy trial" of 1917; depression and war; innovation and expansion; and expansion and consolidation.
