"Menschen weichen einander in urbanen Räumen beiläufig aus. Die Routinen der flüchtigen Begegnung werden oftmals unterschätzt. Zu Unrecht! Denn der Blick auf das Ausweichhandeln offenbart einen allmählichen sozialen Wandel, der zur Beantwortung der Frage beiträgt, warum manche Konflikte laut eskalieren und andere eher leise verlaufen. Die Studie untersucht die Bedingungen sowohl der eruptiven Zuspitzung als auch des allmählichen Fortgangs von Konflikten in Kleinstadtgesellschaften. Anhand von Fallstudien verdeutlicht sie, wie und warum sich Gegnerschaften, Kooperationsbeziehungen oder Indifferenz ausbilden. Zudem beantwortet sie die Frage, unter welchen lokalen Voraussetzungen Gewaltereignisse die Kraft gewinnen können, Intergruppenkonflikte zu entzünden. In grundlagentheoretischer Hinsicht führt die Untersuchung Figurations- und Konfliktsoziologie so zusammen, dass sich das Konzept einer figurativen Konfliktsoziologie abzeichnet. Deren prozessanalytische Ausrichtung zielt auf die Erforschung komplexer Konflikt- und Figurationsverläufe, die in je eigensinnige stadtgesellschaftliche Kontexte und globale Horizonte eingebunden sind."
