In den amerikanischen Mittelwesten verlegte Verfilmung von Friedrich Dürrenmatts Krimi. - Konzentriert und packend inszeniert und gespielt. - Kommentar: Was Sean Penns Version von Dürrenmatts Roman nicht hoch genug angerechnet werden kann, ist, dass er das gegen alle Konventionen des Krimis widersprechende Ende übernommen hat: der Mörder wird trotz raffinierter kriminalistischer Anstrengungen nicht gefasst, sondern stirbt, auf dem Weg zu seinem nächsten Mordopfer, "zufällig" bei einem Autounfall. Denn man darf nicht vergessen, dass Dürrenmatt den Roman "Das Versprechen" nicht zuletzt aus Unzufriedenheit mit der Verfilmung seines Drehbuchs "Es geschah am helllichten Tag" geschrieben hat, ein Film, der aus kommerziellen Gründen ein herkömmliches Finale hat.
