Home Economics for Young Men: A Teaching Guide

Intended as a resource guide from which teachers select material appropriate to their needs and students, the document presents curricular suggestions for senior high school males under five major areas: (1) human development and the family, (2) personal and family economics, (3) textiles and clothing, (4) food and nutrition, and (5) housing. Each area is introduced by a brief discussion of the educational needs of males in that particular area and a listing of general objectives. Each topic within the broad area contains pertinent generalizations, student objectives, learning environments/activities, and a multimedia reference list. Research data was collected mainly in Iowa and does not reflect the needs of adolescent male minority students living in low socioeconomic environments or large metropolitan communities. Suggestions will need to be modified in order to meet the needs of this group, as well as for younger boys in the 7th-10th grades. Many of the suggestions presented are appropriate for girls, but male characteristics are stressed in order to present the material most effectively. (Lh).
