Memoirs of the war in the Southern Department of the United States
Henry Lee III was 20 years old when the Thirteen Colonies declared independence in 1776. As a member of an influential Virginia family, Lee was commissioned captain of a detachment of dragoons. Lee earned the nickname "Light-Horse Harry" for his exceptional horsemanship, and his men came to be known as Lee's Legion. Lee served throughout the American South during the war, where he distinguished himself as a daring and decisive leader. After the war Lee served as a delegate to the Continental Congress, a member of Virginia's General Assembly and governor of Virginia. The fifth child of Lee's second marriage was Robert E. Lee, who served as the Confederate general-in-chief during the American Civil War.
