"Richard Pimentel naît en 1947 dans l'Oregon. L'événement est si inattendu pour sa mère, qui avait subi auparavant sept fausses couches, qu'elle sombre dans la folie, réservant du coup à son fils une enfance chaotique et solitaire. Parvenu à l'âge adulte, Richard, à qui l'université de Portland vient de refuser une bourse d'études, part combattre au Vietnam. Revenu du front presque complètement sourd, il se lie d'amitié avec Mike Stoltz, qui a perdu une jambe au combat, puis avec Art Honeyman, un étudiant atteint de paralysie cérébrale. Inspiré par ces derniers, Richard met à profit ses dons d'orateur pour défendre les droits des handicapés et garantir à ceux-ci une meilleure intégration dans la société américaine.
