Rebels take over an ICBM base in the former U.S.S.R., and a nuclear submarine, the U.S.S. Alabama, is deployed to retaliate in case they launch. The submarine is attacked and the radio systems knocked out, after which a partially recovered message seems to be an order to launch. Captain Ramsey believes duty requires him to launch, while XO Hunter wants to wait for a confirmation message; mutiny ensues.

Un drammatico confronto tra i due uomini fa sì che si addivenga ad un ultimatum: se entro due minuti la radio che il tecnico Russel Vossler tenta di riparare freneticamente, non darà un messaggio chiarificatore, si procedere al lancio dei missili nucleari. La radio di bordo viene riparata in extremis e così viene ricevuto l'ordine di fermare il lancio. In patria, la Commissione d'inchiesta, pur riconoscendo la gravità dei fatti avvenuti a bordo del sommergibile, non può che dare parzialmente ragione ad entrambi gli ufficiali. Ramsey si ritira e su sua proposta Hunter viene promosso."
