  • "Set in the 1930's, Narsingh is a Rajput cab driver down on his luck. He is offered a better job in Bihar, Bengal by a businessman. There he meets an old friend and is attracted to his sister Neeli, a Catholic schoolmistress. All seems well by day, but his boss has him delivering packages at night that contain opium. During these shady dealings, he meets Gulabi, who had been forced into prostitution. Narsingh finds himself in two dilemnas--which woman does he really love and does he want to go straight and be poor or be rich, but corrupt."
  • "Set on the Bihar-Bengal border, where Marwari businessmen - a powerful Hindi-dialect community of entrepreneurs much disliked throughout India - and Rajputs of warrior caste (from Rajasthan) have both settled, "Abhijan"'s central character is Narsingh, a disillusioned, frequently drunk Rajput reduced in status to an ill-educated taxi driver. Proud and hot-tempered, with a passion for his 1930s Chrysler, Narsingh is offered work transporting tins of ghee for Sukhanram, a shady merchant, and finds himself drawn against his better judgement into trafficking opium."
