  • ""The remarkable journey known as 'The Great Migration' began in the early 1900's when thousands of sons and daughters of former slaves travelled from the rural [South] northward, in search of jobs, justice and a better life. Today their story is preserved by poets and painters and the people who experienced first hand this chapter of American history. The Great Migration was an American exodus and for an entire generation of African-Americans it was a journey of hope. They came by foot, by bus, by river, by rail and helped shape the future of America."--1994 Peabody Awards entry form. This program uses archival footage, photographs, and interviews with persons who made the journey or whose families made the journey North in search of a better life. The program looks at the social conditions of southern blacks that drove them northward and the reality blacks found when they reached their new homes in the North. Success didn't guarantee blacks better treatment, as recounted in stories about the discrimination and racism faced by Jackie Robinson and Cab Calloway. Marcus Garvey's Back to Africa movement is discussed as is the importance to northern blacks of maintaining their southern roots."
