  • "Narrated by James Mason, this series concentrates on the film industry in Hollywood: the stars, the scandals, the directors, producers, cameramen, stuntmen and the films themselves."
  • "Summary: A celebration of the birth of Hollywood as an industry, a town and the people who made it happen. This documentary series looks at the stars, the scandals, the directors, producers, cameramen, stuntmen, and, of course, the silent films themselves that make up the legend we know as Hollywood. Incomplete thirteen part series. Only nine episodes recorded. Three tapes with three parts each. Tape 1: Single Beds and Double Standards - after a series of scandals shattered the Hollywood dream, producers appointed Will Hays to clean up the industry before public moral outrage put them all out of work: Goes to War - The outbreak of World War I gave Hollywood one of its greatest plot sources, and plenty of profits: Hazard of the Game - Silent films are often remembered for their physical stunts. Stuntmen took the risks while the stars took the credit. Tape 2: Swanson and Valentino - Two great stars personified Hollywood, Gloria Swanson and Rudolph Valentino: Autocrats - two of Hollywood's greatest directors, Cecil B. DeMille and Erich von Stroheim: Comedy, a Serious Business - Comedy was king, and battling for the throne were box office rivals Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton, Harry Langdon and Charlie Chaplin. Tape 3: Out West - The Old West was still there when movies arrived. Cowboys saw a chance to relive their youth by working in films: The Man with the Megaphone - Silent film directors were a flamboyant breed, pioneers who invented the art of film direction as they went: Trick of the Light - in the early days, directors relied on the skills of the cameraman to transform a pretty girl into a 'screen goddess'. Offair, ABC, 156 mins each."
