The film is a straight docudrama except that the story is acted out by an ensemble of Barbie dolls working on miniaturized sets with voice-overs providing dialog. The film traces the Carpenters' career, their rise to fame, growing family tensions, and Karen's mounting battle with anorexia, which she ultimately lost in 1983. With seventies footage interspersed throughout, this film takes a serious look at anorexia, the seventies and pop-culture despite what might appear to be kitsch on the surface."
