Two stories are related in this book. One is the traditional tale, largely derived from chroniclers who relied as much on hearsay as nearly contemporary evidence and, combining the two, created a legend that rises at times into the realm of myth. The other story is based on the hitherto unexploited archives of the Bonaparte family and scattered documents, mostly in Corsica, that have remained neglected or ignored.
