Wind (Motion picture : 1928)

The last silent film starring one of the greatest 'silent' actresses, Lillian Gish, was a collaboration with the Swedish director Victor Sjostrom. The conviction of Gish's performance and Sjostrom's subdued lyricism lends weight to the melodrama, the story of a woman whose sexuality is at odds with the community in which she lives. Gish plays Letty, the genteel Easterner who arrives at the desolate Texas homestead of her cousin. Alien to the rough manners of the prairie settlement Letty is obliged to enter into a marriage of convenience. Disastorously, she seeks escape with the romantic stranger she had met on the train. Disintegrating in mind and body she both acts and is acted upon by the elements - sand driven by the incessant wind. The ending was imposed by the studio uneasy about the films uncompromising bleakness.

While Lige is away on a roundup, Roddy arrives and takes advantage of Letty's helplessness and she shoots him. • ""A haunting drama of a woman driven to madness on the Texas prairie. Tormented by the driving, relentless wind, and her moral confusion stemming from the affections of two men who want her, young, innocent Letty fights for her sanity, and her life"--Videodisc sleeve. "Letty, a girl from Virginia, trainbound for her cousin's ranch in the western prairies, meets Roddy, who hints at a marriage proposal. At the ranch, Cora's children and husband become too fond of Letty, and she is forced to leave. With nowhere to go, she decides to accept Roddy's implied invitation to become his wife. When she discovers him already married, she hastily marries Lige, a roughhewn son of the soil at whom she had previously scoffed. While Lige is away for a round-up of wild horses during a particularly fierce windstorm, Roddy forces his way into Lige's home and stays the night with Letty, urging her to go with him in the morning. She refuses, shoots him when he becomes insistent, laboriously drags his body outside, and buries it in the shifting sand. Letty spends a day of terror that approaches madness; but Lige returns, and Letty decides that she no longer wishes to return to Virginia; they will face the wind together"--AFI catalog, 1921-1930."@en
