  • "Ibsen's philosophical play concerns a young man who turns outlaw after running away with another man's bride. Peer Gynt wanders the world and experiences many adventures, while always looking for a home--and redemption."@en
  • "Peer Gynt is a play by the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. It was written in 1867, and first performed in Christiania (now Oslo) on February 24, 1876, with incidental music by the composer Edvard Grieg. Ibsen wrote Peer Gynt while traveling to Rome, Ischia and Sorrento. It was first published on November 14, 1867, in Copenhagen. The first edition comprised 1,250 copies. It was followed by a re-print of 2,000 copies after 14 days. The large sales were mostly due to the success of Ibsen's previous play, Brand. Unlike Ibsen's other later plays, Peer Gynt is written in verse. This is because it."@en

  • "This five act play was based on the Norwegian fairy tale, "Per Gynt", and broke down the structural barriers of Norwegian theatre, as Ibsen wrote the entire play in verse-form. "Peer Gynt" drifts between the conscious and unconscious, blending realism and folkloric fantasy. Ibsen used this play to satirize transcendentalist ideas, new and revolutionary at the time, that encouraged a return to nature and simplicity."
  • "Henrik Ibsen's magnificent "dramatic poem", as he called it, first published in 1867, comes truly to life through its excellent versatility and vitality of form. John Northam's translation communicates the shifting pace and tone and offers a close account of the expressive range of the brilliant original."@en
  • "Ibsen, Henrik: Peer Gynt. Übers. v. Christian Morgenstern, 13.-14. Tsd., Berlin: S. Fischer Verlag, [o. J.]. Erstdruck: Kopenhagen (Gyldendal) 1867. Uraufführung: Kristiania, 24.2.1876. Hier in der Übers. v. Christian Morgenstern."
  • "A play which humorously yet profoundly explores the virtues, vices, and follies common to all humanity as it follows the roguish life of a charming but arrogant young man."
  • "Overview: This translation is based upon the Norwegian text in the Centenary Edition of Ibsen's collected works. It provides a close account of the quality of Ibsen's play by reproducing as nearly as possible not only the meaning in the literal sense but the verse forms that constitute so much of the substance and dramatic structure of the original. It makes an important contribution to those studying Peer Gynt in English, as until now little of the dramatic quality of the play has found its way into English translations."
  • "This play is a high spirited, poetical fantasy, written in Italy with an abandon that was new to Ibsen."@en
  • "The Catholic University of America, Speech and Drama Department, Rev. G.V. Hartke, O.P., director, presents Henrik Ibsen's romantic fantasy "Peer Gynt," directed by Walter Kerr and Dr. Josephine McGarry Callan, settings and lighting by Ralph Brown."
  • "Among the masterpieces of world literature, this great verse drama by Norway's famed playwright humorously yet profoundly explores the virtues, vices, and follies common to all humanity as it follows the roguish life of a charming but arrogant young man. A literary delight since it was first published in 1875."@en
