Allen's first film as director is a parody of social attitudes, psychological stereotypes, television and film genres using a string of surrealistic gags and jokes, unlikely characters and anything else that occurred to Allen at the time. The criminal career of Virgil Starkwell presented in mock-documentary style provides an apparent structure tenuously holding together a series of fast, discontinuous gags, virtually throwaways based on the single shot rather than the sequence.
