Ab 6."

  • "High in the Swiss Alps, Heidi, a five-year-old orphan, comes to live with her grandfather. His neighbors say he is a fierce old hermit, of whom they are all afraid. Heidi, however, proves to be a remarkable, unaffected child, who quickly charms her grandfather. In fact, for Heidi, nothing could be better than living with him. She enjoys a genuine enthusiasm for life: for the goats, which she helps Peter to tend; for the spring flowers on the Alm; for the thick slices of bread and cheese that her grandfather prepares for her; and for the simple hay bed that she occupies in the loft of his hut. However, her Aunt Dete doesn't understand, and it is a sad day when she takes Heidi to live in a strange city with a strange family who want a companion for their young invalid daughter named Klara. Heidi does her best to be a friend to Klara, but her longing for home becomes too much to bear."@en

All the titles in the collection are pre-1923 monographs that have been selected from the shelves of libraries, cultural heritage institutions or other reputable collectors. By bringing these volumes out of the stacks and making them available in print-on-demand and digital formats, the Shelf2Life project hopes to open these books up to new readers and new generations. With content as varied as historic mountaineering, trains and railroads and the American Civil War, these books are certain to find a new audience among historians, collectors and even hobbyists interested in traditional bookbinding, publishing and typesetting. Access to these works is an important tool to understanding our past and the people, events and experiences of our collective culture."@en

  • "Orphaned at an early age, the young girl Heidi finds a home high in the Swiss Alps with her reclusive grandfather. There, each glorious day is filled with discovery, adventure and the friendship of a gentle goat boy, Peter. But when Heidi is sent away from her mountain paradise to a large, cold city, she is determined to find a way to return to the place she loves. For generations, children around the world have fallen under the spell of this small alpine girl. Heidi is the heartwarming story of an exuberant child' s goodness, courage, and love. Filled with unforgettable characters and majestic scenery, it is an enduring classic of children' s literature. Author Johanna Spyri lived her entire life in a small Swiss town near Zurich. Heidi, first published in 1881, is a largely autobiographical work that echoes Ms. Spyri' s affection for the countryside, flowers and animals that surrounded her."@en

  • "The story of Heidi is the story of the greatness of her affection for her pet goats, for Peter and her grandfather, and for her mountain home. Permeating the whole tale is the play of sunshine and shadow on the slopes of the jagged peaks of the great, glittering, snow-capped mountains of Heidi's Alpine home."

Soon, however, she comes to appreciate her new, simple life; she loves walking through the pastures with her friend Peter the goatherd and spending quiet time with her grandfather. Three years later, Heidi's aunt returns to take her to the town to become a companion for Clara, a sick little girl of a wealthy family. But even though Heidi bonds with Clara and brings new life to the household, she becomes more and more homesick."@en
