Shame revisits Bergman's personal themes, the isolation of the individual, the quest for meaning in existence, and the conflict between the necessity of human relationships and their ultimate futility. Bergman first dealt with the idea of the apocalypse in The Seventh Seal, a film set during the period of the crusades.
