French and English dialogue, noises, and music are on the soundtrack, but the humor is intended to be visual in the manner of a silent comedy film."

  • "Tati's comedies, especially Vacances and Playtime, are in the forefront of modernism in the cinema. In developing the Hulot character, Tati found inspiration in the silent comedies of Sennett, Chaplin and Keaton. In eschewing the close-up his point of departure was film narrative before Griffith. The Hulot character is not a conventional comic figure. He is not so much the focus of humour as the catalyst for revealing the sterile routinisation of modern living. Narrative sequence here is unconventionally provided by a fixed time scheme of seven days. Formally, Tati departs from conventions in his tight stitching of an assemblage of gags and incidents through the use of overlapping action in depth combined with overlapping sound and often radical 90 and 180 degree cuts."@en

  • "Five years in the making, the film marks the debut of Tati's altar ego, Mr. Hulot, a gangly and awkward Frenchman, perpetually the center and possible cause of a whirlwind of disasters, pratfalls, and mishaps. Tati's scrupulous attention to detail and almost arabesque sense of humor colors the entire film, from the departure of a gaggle of tourists from a malfunctioning train station to the minutiae of resort life."

This brillant exercise in pantomime dramatizes the well intentioned but nearly catastrophic misadventures of a meek but clumsy bachelor. He opens a door and the winds invade; he goes canoeing and his canoe fails him; he starts out on a picnic and ends up in a funeral cortege. Sound track in French with English subtitles."
