"Tati's comedies, especially Vacances and Playtime, are in the forefront of modernism in the cinema. In developing the Hulot character, Tati found inspiration in the silent comedies of Sennett, Chaplin and Keaton. In eschewing the close-up his point of departure was film narrative before Griffith. The Hulot character is not a conventional comic figure. He is not so much the focus of humour as the catalyst for revealing the sterile routinisation of modern living. Narrative sequence here is unconventionally provided by a fixed time scheme of seven days. Formally, Tati departs from conventions in his tight stitching of an assemblage of gags and incidents through the use of overlapping action in depth combined with overlapping sound and often radical 90 and 180 degree cuts."@en
