The tenant of Wildfell hall; Agnes Grey

HarperCollins is proud to present its new range of best-loved, essential classics. 'I see that a man cannot give himself up to drinking without being miserable one-half his days and mad the other.' When Helen flees from her alcoholic husband in order to protect her son she defies societal convention. Earning a living as an artist, she becomes the mysterious tenant of Wildfell Hall as she hides herself away and uses her art to support her child. However, the beautiful and reclusive young woman soon begins to stir up malicious gossip and speculation. Captivated and drawn to Helen, Gilbert Markham becomes suspicious when he begins to hear these stories, however it is only when he reads Helen's diary that he learns the full cruelty that her husband subjected her to in her previous life. Rejecting the societal norms surrounding marriage in Victorian Society, Anne BrontE's novel, said to be based on the experiences of her own brother Branwell, shocked her readers at the time and still remains a scandalous read today.

  • "Anne Brontë's second and last novel was widely and contentiously reviewed upon its 1848 publication, in part because its subject matter - domestic violence, alcoholism, women's rights, and universal salvation - was so controversial. The tale unfolds through a series of letters between two friends as one man learns more about Helen Huntingdon and the past that brought this young painter and single mother to Wildfell Hall. Powerfully plotted and unconventionally structured, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is now considered to be a classic of Victorian literature."

  • "Anne Brontë' s The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is the story of Helen Graham, a woman who, unique for her time, acts in her own best interest to rise above her personal circumstances to secure a better life for her son. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is a powerful and gripping story of oppression, bravery, and love."
  • "Anne Bront--euml--;'s second novel seemed to many contemporary readers shockingly unlike her first Agnes Grey, published in the previous year. There, Charlotte Bront--euml--; had admired her sister's `quiet description and simple pathos', but she was disturbed by The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, which reminded reviewers of Wuthering Heights: it was, in spite of its `excellent moral', `coarse, not to say brutal'. For Anne's heroine, Helen Huntingdon, having enduredtoo many of the `revolting scenes' deplored by reviewers, leaves her dissolute husband in order to earn her own living and rescue her so."@en
  • "The mysterious new tenant of Wildfell Hall is a strong-minded woman who keeps her own counsel. Helen 'Graham' - exiled with her child to the desolate moorland mansion, adopting an assumed name and earning her living as a painter - has returned to Wildfell Hall in flight from a disastrous marriage. Narrated by her neighbour Gilbert Markham, and in the pages of her own diary, the novel portrays Helen's eloquent struggle for independence at a time when the law and society defined a married woman as her husband's property."

  • "Compelling in its imaginative power and bold naturalism, the novel opens in the autumn of 1812, when a mysterious woman who calls herself Helen Graham seeks refuge at the desolate moorland mansion of Wildfell Hall. Bronte's enigmatic heroine becomes the object of gossip and jealousy as neighbors learn she is escaping from an abusive marriage and living under an assumed name. A daring story that exposed the dark brutality of Victorian chauvinism, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall was nevertheless attacked by some critics as a celebration of the same excesses it criticized. This edition of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is the companion volume to the Mobil Masterpiece Theatre WGBH television presentation broadcast on PBS."

  • "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall challenged the prevailing morals of the Victorian era. Especially shocking, at the time, was Helen's slamming of her bedroom door in the face of her husband, thereby overturning the sexual politics. It is considered to be one of the first feminist novels. The main character, Helen, is spirited and forthright, unafraid to speak to the men in her life with frankness. Anne Brontë portrays this as desirable, compared to the meekness of Milicent, who is trampled and ignored by her unrepentant husband. Vice is not unique to the men, however; Lady Lowboro."@en
  • "Anne Bronte's second novel is a passionate and courageous challenge to the conventions supposedly upheld by Victorian society and reflected in circulating-library fiction. The heroine, Helen Huntingdon, after a short period of initial happiness, leaves her dissolute husband, and must earn her own living to rescue her son from his influence. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is compelling in its imaginative power, the realism and range of its dialogue, and its psychological insight into the characters involved in a marital battle."

It is framed as a letter from Gilbert Markham to his friend and brother-in-law about the events leading to his meeting his wife. The novel is divided into three volumes. The story is narrated by a young farmer, Gilbert Markham, and initially focuses upon his love for Helen Graham. Helen is a widow, though still young, and has only recently arrived in the vicinity with her son Arthur. Gilbert discredits local gossip that begins about Helen, the new tenant, and her landlord Lawrence. But he subsequently hears the two talking intimately and beats Lawrence uncompromisingly.
