Sir Magnus Donners, the well-known business tycoon of unusual tastes, holds a dinner party where Nicholas runs into old friends like Hugh and Matilda Moreland, Peter Templer and Widmerpool. Widmerpool, turning up to everyone's amusement in military attire, arrives late to the party and is disturbed to find Sir Magnus photographing his guests, who each pose as one of the Seven Deadly Sins. The choice of sins turns out to be peculiarly apt.
