  • "Simon Boccanegra, nominated Doge of Genoa by the plebeians Paolo and Pietro, hopes this will facilitate his marriage with Maria, daughter of the patrician Jacopo Fiesco, who has so far refused Boccanegra as a son-in-law even though Maria already has a daughter by him. Twenty-five years later, Fiesco, under the name of Andrea, lives with his adopted ward Amelia Grimaldi who is in love with the nobleman Gabriele Adorno. When Boccanegra visits Amelia to ask her to marry Paolo, he realizes that Amelia is his daughter Maria. Paolo eventually poisons Boccanegra but before he dies, Boccanegra reveals Amelia's identity to Fiesco. They pardon one another and Simon names Gabriele Adorno as his successor."
  • "Placido Domingo's triumphant return to his baritone roots is captured in this stunning 2-DVD set of the Royal Opera House s 2010 production of Verdi's Simon Boccanegra. Conducted by Antonio Pappano and directed by Elijah Moshinsky, Domingo is joined in this performance by Mariana Polavskaya, Joseph Calleja, Ferruccio Furlanetto, Jonathan Summers and Lukas Jakobski."

  • "Opera takes place in the 14th century, in and around Genoa."
  • "When this sumptuous production by Giancarlo del Monaco opened in 1995, legendary tenor Plácido Domingo gave a riveting performance as the fiery revolutionary Gabriele Adorno, a tenor part. In the 2010 revival, he made history by taking on the baritone title role, one of Verdi's most fascinating characters, and thrilling audiences with his multifaceted and gripping portrayal. Boccanegra is beset on all sides, juggling political adversaries bent on murder with his love for his long-lost daughter Amelia (Adrianne Pieczonka). James Levine's conducting brings out all the color and surging emotion of Verdi's magnificent score."
  • "Mélodrame en 1 prologue et 3 actes sur un livret de Francesco Maria Piave et Arrigo Boito."
  • "This evocative production by Giancarlo Del Monaco sumptuously captures the look and feel of 14th century Genoa and is a perfect compliment to Verdi's setting of this story of searing conflict between public duty and private grief. Plácido Domingo is Gabriele Adorno, sworn enemy of the doge of Genoa, Simon Boccanegra (Vladimir Chernov). Gabriele is in love with the beautiful Amelia (Kiri Te Kanawa at her most affecting) who turns out to be none other than the long-lost daughter the doge. James Levine's authoritative conducting of the Met orchestra and chorus reveals the dark power of Verdi's score."
  • "The famed Verdi opera staged by Reza Abdoh."
  • "Sherrill Milnes brought vivid theatrical force to his portrait of Simon Boccanegra, the 14th century Doge of Genoa who battles private demons and political enemies. Only the greatest Verdi baritones manage to put their individual stamp on this monumental role, and Milnes succeeds brilliantly, mixing poetry and power to reveal Boccanegra's heart to the audience. Anna Tomowa-Sintow is the long-lost daughter he finds, but, he discovers, she loves Gabriele Adorno (Vasile Moldoveanu), a man determined to destroy him. James Levine's superb conducting and Tito Capobianco's dramatic production add to the gripping performance."
  • "Simon Boccanegra, Doge of Genoa, is one of Verdi's most profound characters, a complex man ruled by love of family and devotion to country. This opera centers around the tangled personal passions and political rivalries of Renaissance Italy."
  • "Fourteenth-century Genoa is the setting for one of Verdi's grandest works. This Glyndebourne Festival Opera production stars Peter Sidhom, Daniel Borowski, Giancarlo Pasquetto, and Alastair Miles with London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Mark Elder."
