Bone People

The Bone People is set in the harsh environment of the South Island beaches of New Zealand. The principal character, Kerewin Holmes, is a primarily Pakeha, part-Maori painter in self-exile, living in a tower she has built with money she won in a lottery. Kerewin is drawn to out of her isolation by Simon, a mute boy who is cast up on the beach, the only survivor of a shipwreck. Joe, a Maori factory worker who becomes Simon's foster father and loves and ferociously batters the boy, completes the trinity of characters at the center of the novel.

  • "Kerewina - sometime artist - living alone on the edge of the sea, finds her self-sufficient life interrupted by the arrival of a silent urchin who communicates with her only by sign language. He is claimed eventually by his stepfather, whose relationship with the boy often erupts into violence, frustration and despair."
  • "This unusual novel, set in New Zealand, concentrates on three people: Kerewin Holmes, a part-Maori painter who has chosen to isolate herself in a tower she built from lottery winnings; Simon, a troubled and mysterious little boy; and Joe Gillayley, the Maori factory worker who is Simon's foster father. Elements of Maori myth and culture are woven into the novel's exploration of the passions and needs that bind these three people together, for good or ill. It's not easy reading, but the story is compelling despite its stylistic eccentricities and great length. The novel is the winner of the Pegasus Prize."@en

  • "Integrating both Maori myth and New Zealand reality, The Bone People became the most successful novel in New Zealand publishing history when it appeared in 1984. Set on the South Island beaches of New Zealand, a harsh environment, the novel chronicles the complicated relationships between three emotional outcasts of mixed European and Maori heritage. Kerewin Holmes is a painter and a loner, convinced that "to care for anything is to invite disaster." Her isolation is disrupted one day when a six-year-old mute boy, Simon, breaks into her house. The sole survivor of a mysterious shipwreck, Simon has been adopted by a widower Maori factory worker, Joe Gillayley, who is both tender and horribly brutal toward the boy. Through shifting points of view, the novel reveals each character's thoughts and feelings as they struggle with the desire to connect and the fear of attachment."

  • "A story of Kerewin, a despairing part-Maori artist who is convinced that her solitary life is the only way to face the world. Her cocoon is rudely blown away by the sudden arrival during a rainstorm of Simon, a mute six-year-old whose past seems to hold some terrible trauma."@en
