War against disease

Using unique and detailed images shot with advanced electron microscopes, this program makes it possible to meet our enemies up close; some enlarged 10 million times. We see how microbes attack the human body and how our immune systems defend it. The program looks at work on the SARS virus, cutting edge stem cell research and the discovery of the HIV virus. It also looks at some remarkable medical discoveries in re-enactments; stories include: penicillin, malaria, the discovery of blood groups, polio, the first identified virus, antibodies, skin cancer, stem cells and the new plagues.

  • "Award-winning photographer Lennart Nilsson uses state of the art techniques to show how microbes attack the body and how our immune systems defen it."
  • "Explores humanity's war against lethal microorganisms and viruses, including SARS and AIDS. Images by medical photographer Lennart Nilsson show how microbes attack the body and how our immune systems defend it. Includes reenactments of medical discoveries: penicillin, blood groups, methods of malaria control, and the polio vaccine. Investigates the rapid speed with which the SARS virus spread around the globe. Leading immunologist Robert Gallo urges awareness to prevent these mounting threats."
