"Based on a mediaeval ballad, this is a tale of rape and revenge involving a conflict between Paganism and Christianity. There is a sense of reality in this recreation of life in 14th century Sweden. The opposition between light and dark and elemental fire and water in the imagery suggests a clear-cut duality in nature which the film undermines giving the simple oppositions ironic overtones. Instinct and impulse can easily override right and wrong as in the case of the goat herds. The morality of the Fateher's revenge is questionable - there is a suggestion of his incestous desire for his daughter Karin, reinforced by his wife's jealousy. Karin, the apparent symbol of purity, is proud, even arrogant and flirts with the goat-herds before their attack. The dark step-daughter Ingeri comes closest to full consciousness, the realisation of what Robin Wood sees as the film's theme of purgation 'by natural processes of the fulfilment of evil and the passing beyond it.'"
