Rand Intelligent Terminal Agent (RITA) : design philosophy ; a report prepared for Defense Advanced Resarch Projects Agency
The report presents a description of the design constraints, design requirements, and overall design philosophy guiding the implementation of the Rand Intelligent Terminal Agent (RITA). RITA is a set of computer programs residing in a PDP-11/45 minicomputer. These programs are capable of acting as a 'user agent' which can perform a variety of tasks, under either direct user control or semiautonomous operation over extended periods of time. The RITA system is designed to be widely applicable as a stand-alone computing resource for local text manipulation, as a limited heuristic modeling tool, and as a front end to remote computing systems and networks. Operational features in the current (January 1976) version of RITA are described.
