THIS STUDY ANALYSES BOTH OF HIS CAREERS, STARTING WITH THE OBSERVATION THAT HIS REGULAR LITERARY ACTIVITY BEGAN WHEN HIS INVOLVEMENT IN POLITICAL HISTORY STOPPED. THE CONTRADICTION BETWEEN INVOLVEMENT AND DISTANCE MAY NOT SIMPLY BE THE CONTINGENT OPPOSITION BETWEEN THE ERAS BEFORE AND AFTER NAZISM OR THE EXPULSION OF THE GERMAN COMMUNITY FROM CZECHOSLOVAKIA.
