Nishant Night's end

http://schema.org/description

  • "Based on Tendulkar's original play which apparently was inspired by an actual event. A story of injustice centering around a tyrant landlord, a schoolteacher and the teacher's wife in an Indian village."
  • "Set in pre-independence India, Nishant shares with Ankur and Manthan the theme of the intrusion of an outsider from the city into a rural setting creating a situation of conflict. Here it is an idealistic school teacher who brings unfamiliar values of equality into an essentially feudal society. When his wife is brutally abducted and raped by the Zamindar's family, the school teacher finds that the local police officials and the priest are held in the Zamindar's sway. In the meantime his wife, whose sexual exploitation stands for the whole process of class oppression, has come to half accept her fate. While the Zamindar is something of a traditional villain there is a hint of irony in the title. By the film's climax the villagers have become a mob. Nishant is very much a companion to Benegal's first feature Ankur."
  • "A wealthy zamindar and his brothers dominate a village and treat the villagers as slaves. The brothers abduct the wife of a village schoolmaster. He reacts by stirring up an uprising among the villagers who eventually strike back and kill most members of the zamindar family."
