Intervention program for Hispanic couples : an adaptation study of PREP

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a culturally sensitive adaptation of the Prevention Relationship Enhancement Program (PREP) for Hispanic couples. The study can be summarized in three major parts: needs assessment, program adaptation, and pilot testing. A needs assessment was done by conducting ten semi-structured phone interviews with pastors of Hispanic churches and mental health professionals that often work with Hispanic couples. Based on the needs assessment, the PREP materials were adapted and pilot tested. In order to accomplish the goal of this section, the program was implemented with nine couples and feedback was obtained from them along the way. Each participant's acculturation level was measured once using the Bidimensional Acculturation Scale for Hispanics (BAS; Mann & Gamba, 1996). The PREP Relationship Dynamics Scale (RDS; Stanley & Markman, 1997) was also administered to each participant to measure "danger signs" present prior to the study (pre-RDS score) and after completing the program (post-RDS score). Post-RDS scores were significantly lower than pre-RDS scores. In addition, at the end of each lecture a questionnaire was distributed to each individual and suggestions for further adaptations were made. Implications for future research and development of PREP for Hispanic couples are discussed.
