The new modernists six European architects

Six European architects who are seen as representing an emerging European identity and a new sense of confidence in architecture are interviewed. Rejecting the post-modern label, they operate in the middle ground committed to the principles of modernity but with particular concern for the integration of building into their sites, and the appropriate design for climate, landscape and regional tradition. The architects are Jacques Herzog, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Hans Kollhoff, Kristian Gullichsen, Jean Nouvel, and Antonio Cruz.

  • "Summary: Presents six European architects who are seen as representing an emerging European identity and a new sense of confidence in architecture. Rejecting the post-modern label, they operate in the middle ground committed to the principles of modernity but with particular concern for the integration of buildings into their sites, and the appropriate design for climate, landscape, and regional tradition. Each architect talks about his work and particular interest."
  • "As we enter the end of the century, architecture in Europe seems to be on the verge of a new renaissance in which young architects from all over the continent are beginning to produce works of a surprising vitality and variety. From Seville to Berlin, these architects have adopted various strategies, whether it be the reinterpretation of traditional masonry in the light of modern abstraction, or the insertion of modern housing blocks into an historic urban fabric, or even the adaptation of high-tech architecture to include a subtle reference to traditional Islamic vernacular. Repudiating post-modern pastiche, these architects operate in a middle ground: while they remain committed to the syntax of modernity, their concern is with the integration of buildings into their sites and with the inflection of architecture in terms of climate, landscape, and regional tradition. Beneath their different approaches they are united in a search for tectonic quality, one that is free from the limitation of dogma and style. They may be seen as representing an emerging European identity and a new sense of confidence."

  • "This film examines an equally interesting selection of European architects. Critic Kenneth Frampton sees this group of architects, working from Seville to Finland, understanding and interacting with the ideas and structures of Aalto, Saarinen and Mies to form a confident new European identity."
