"As we enter the end of the century, architecture in Europe seems to be on the verge of a new renaissance in which young architects from all over the continent are beginning to produce works of a surprising vitality and variety. From Seville to Berlin, these architects have adopted various strategies, whether it be the reinterpretation of traditional masonry in the light of modern abstraction, or the insertion of modern housing blocks into an historic urban fabric, or even the adaptation of high-tech architecture to include a subtle reference to traditional Islamic vernacular. Repudiating post-modern pastiche, these architects operate in a middle ground: while they remain committed to the syntax of modernity, their concern is with the integration of buildings into their sites and with the inflection of architecture in terms of climate, landscape, and regional tradition. Beneath their different approaches they are united in a search for tectonic quality, one that is free from the limitation of dogma and style. They may be seen as representing an emerging European identity and a new sense of confidence."
