A 20-year old, whose name is also Kotzebue, is in search of parents and self when she meets Roswitha, a middle-aged librarian from East Berlin. Twenty years ago Roswitha's husband was killed as they made their escape from East Berlin. A friendship develops between Kotz and Roswitha as they search for the truth about their respective pasts.
