Organizing a healthy student fellowship for African-American students

The challenge facing our campus ministry is to effectively establish an African-American Christian fellowship on a large, commuter, urban university campus. By involving students in a sustaining peer encounter with Christians with whom they share some social and cultural affinity, lifelong advantages of a life of faith in Christ will be achieved and reflected in future aspirations. The theological principle undergirding this study maintains that the church of Jesus Christ must be a pilgrim people offering authentic experiences of community/koinonia with an understanding of being pilgrim persons to a commuter based student population of "would be disciplesN as they work beside them. This study examines ways to create a nurturing environment on a campus where African-Americans are minimally involved in extracurricular activities. The most important outcome of this study is to have African-American students engage in healthy community at the University of Illinois at Chicago. This requires enhancing their biblical/theological understanding as they raise issues and questions regarding their experiences and their encounters with others. A sensitivity to the needs of young adults in all aspects of their lives must be required of those teaching and leading in this area of campus work.
