Wladyslaw weigert sich, eine Position als von den Nazis eingesetzter Aufseher innerhalb des Ghettos einzunehmen, lieber verdient er als Klavierspieler in einem heruntergekommenen Café etwas zum Lebensunterhalt der Familie dazu. Doch 1942 werden seine Eltern und Geschwister ins Konzentrationslager gebracht. Ihn selbst rettet ein polnischer Kollaborateur vor der Deportation. Nun beginnt sein einsamer Kampf ums Überleben: er schuftet in einem Bautrupp, schmuggelt Waffen für die Untergrundbewegung, flieht aus dem Ghetto, bevor der jüdische Aufstand von den Nazis blutig niedergeschlagen wird. Endlich findet er Unterschlupf in einer alten Villa. Doch ausgerechnet die ist von deutschen Offizieren zu einem militärischen Hauptquartier umfunktioniert worden. So wird der misshandelte und halbverhungerte Szpilman eines Tages von einem der deutschen Offiziere auf dem Dachboden entdeckt.
