The spanish earth

The classic documentary of the Civil War in Spain, which culminated in the Franco dictatorship. It was also a collaboration between writers Lillian Hellman, John Dos Passos, Archibald MacLeish and Ernest Hemingway. Focusing on the battle of Madrid, the film is a deeply felt record of a war that captured the imagination of young idealists throughout Europe and North America. They took up arms and went to fight the Fascists; Ivens took his camera and came back with an enduring indictment of modern war.

  • "Classic documentary made during the Spanish Civil War to dramatize the effect of the Fascist uprising on the ordinary citizen. • "L'agonie de la guerre civile espagnole. Un documentaire montrant la lutte du gouvernement Républicain espagnol contre l'action menée par les forces d'extrêmes droites du général Franco et renforcée par l'Allemagne nazie et l'Italie fasciste."
  • "Contemporary Historians, Inc., the American production company that made this film came into being during an era when the Spanish government's fight for survival against Franco's armies was being championed in intellectual circles throughout the United States. The Spanish Civil War was seen by both the right and the left as the first act in the inevitable struggle that would take place between Nazi Germany, Great Britain, The Soviet Union and The United States. The Spanish Earth intercuts battle scenes where we see Franco's forces attempting to take Madrid, with the building of an irrigation project. Scenes of land recently confiscated from absentee landlords, in order to grow food for Republican troops defending Madrid, highlight the communitarian ideals of the filmmakers. Orson Welles recorded a narration for this film but it was soon replaced by the voice of Ernest Hemingway which was seen as less theatrical. The Spanish Earth was used to generate support for the Spanish Loyalist cause in screenings throughout the United States and Europe, including a screening for President Roosevelt in the White House. The film was banned in Britain until a later version was released which removed all references to German involvement in the conflict."@en
  • "Depicts the unity of the rebel forces during the Spanish Civil War, showing the efforts of the villagers of Fuentedueña, near Madrid, to irrigate fields confiscated from the feudal landlords in order to increase food supplies, while the people's army defends Madrid."
  • "The aim was to make a film which would give moral and financial support to the Republican forces in Spain. Ivens' initial idea of a docu-drama following a Republican soldier gave way to the idea of a 'film of peace about the war'. The battle of Madrid and the work in the fields on a new irrigation project are presented as interdependent aspects of the same event. Spanish Earth is politically committed reportage with something of the quality of an epic poem; it tells us of ordinary people fighting against a war machine."@en
